How are preserved flowers made?

With modern technology, there are lots of different options for preserving flowers. The traditional methods were drying flowers – in air, sand, or silica gel – or pressing them. These methods kept the original color and scent of the flowers, but they tended to fade over time. And of course, pressed flowers were completely flat; they couldn’t be used in floral arrangements.

Now, it’s more common to preserve flowers with glycerin or by freeze-drying them. The glycerin method replaces the water in flowers with glycerin, so that they keep their original shape and color forever. Freeze-drying has the same effect, but it also retains the scent of the flowers.

As we’ve seen from the different preserving methods, preserved flowers might not always have the same color and scent as fresh flowers. But with modern technology, the gap between “fresh” and “preserved” is smaller than ever.
